First female president of district court
Her Honour Judge Miriam Malone took up duty following a public declaration in the Supreme Court.
The constitutional declaration was made in the presence of Chief Justice John Murray and other members of the court.
Judge Malone, who is married with two children, is a native of Dublin and was educated at UCD and the King’s Inns.
She practised as a barrister in the capital, dealing mainly with criminal matters and civil cases before her ascension to the bench.
Judge Malone was appointed to the district court in March 1997 and dealt across all areas of work associated with the court.
As president she will be in charge of the organisation of 54 judges in 45 districts across the country - dealing with 550,000 matters each year.
