Families to remember Buttevant victims 25 years on

RELATIVES of the 11 victims of the 1980 Buttevant rail tragedy will today gather for the first official memorial to the disaster on its 25th anniversary.

Family members of the dead will light remembrance candles at the special memorial commissioned by Irish Rail.

The five-foot tall bronze-cast structure, which is inscribed with the victims’ names, will be unveiled at the accident site.

<p> Volunteers attending the DMax 7.7 fitness event, in honour of Darragh McCarthy, who tragically passed away last year at just 21 years of age. The sold-out fitness event saw over 300 competitors take on DMax 7.7 featuring seven fitness stations, lasting seven minutes per station with a two minute transition between station. Competitors entered in teams of two and tested their strength, endurance and mental resilience across a series of challenges including rope skipping, ski-erg, medicine ball, assault bike, rowing, burpee box jumps and wall balls.
