Heart-throb Farrell’s star continues to rise in Hollywood
The Dublin heart-throb, who the critics have described as the new Brando, presented the prestigious European Film Award at the Hollywood Film Festival, which was attended by some of the best-known stars in the business.
Currently making $2 million a movie, the son of former Shamrock Rovers footballer Eamonn Farrell looks set to eclipse the success of other Irish Hollywood favourites like Liam Neeson, Pierce Brosnan and Gabriel Byrne.
Farrell arrived at the gala awards ceremony in Beverly Hills with his sister Claudine on Monday night.
The heart-throb has been turning heads in the world’s film capital since his strong performance in Joel Schumacher’s Vietnam War flick Tigerland.
Just a couple of years ago the 5’11” Dubliner was waiting on tables to make ends meet but the Gaiety School of Drama graduate is now a millionaire.
He first came to prominence here with starring roles in Ballykissangel and Deirdre Purcell’s mini-series Falling for a Dancer.
He also starred alongside Kevin Spacey in Thaddeus O’Sullivan’s gangster movie, Ordinary Decent Criminal.
Hollywood heavyweights Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks were the big winners at this year’s ceremony.
Spielberg beat international films like Monsoon Wedding, the Mexican movie Y Tu Mama Tambien, and the star-heavy Road to Perdition to win the Hollywood Movie of the Year Award for his sci-fi thriller Minority Report, which Colin Farrell starred in with Tom Cruise.
Dual Oscar-winner Tom Hanks picked up the Actor of the Year Award for Road to Perdition, beating co-star Paul Newman as well as Robin Williams, Hugh Grant and Matt Damon.
Jennifer Aniston, star of the movie The Good Girl and famous from the hit TV show Friends, won Actress of the Year, seeing off rivals Jodie Foster, Ellen Burstyn and Diane Lane.
Members of the public voted for the winners over the internet.
