Irish Examiner scoops top European design award

THE Irish Examiner has won a top European newspaper design award for its front page about Pope John Paul II’s funeral in April.

The judges praised the Irish Examiner’s use of a large photograph of the Pontiff’s coffin and surrounding the picture with weeping mourners and the headline: Tears for a Father.

Norbert Kuepper, from the European Newspaper Awards, said: “We had a lot of entries in this category (about the Pope’s death) but the Examiner’s front page was unusual.
