Mountjoy may be destroyed, says McDowell

PRISON rights’ activists last night welcomed suggestions by Justice Minister Michael McDowell that Dublin’s Mountjoy prison may be destroyed and be replaced by a new facility outside the city.

Irish Penal Reform Trust (IRPT) chairman Edward Boyne said Mountjoy prison was long past its sell-by date.

“It really is a crucial issue at the level of human rights that we get things sorted out in there,” he said.
