Motors and Me: Ray Senior - ’78 Porsche 911

What are you currently driving?

Porsche 911 1978 ‘backdated’ RS style Sport Classic Grey

Love at first sight, or just a means to get from A to B?

All about the love. Four years a redesign and rebuild. She’s been with the mechanic more than me. I come from a product design background and fell in love with the 911 when I was a kid.

But like many of the California hot-rodders and singer Porsche guys I’ve always felt that the ultimate Porsche aesthetic was a combination of design eras.

My 911 was originally a 1978 SC but now with a structurally modified front-end with the RS long bonnet, wings, and bumpers. Similarly with the rear RS wing and bumpers.

Paint inspiration came from the classic Carrera RS in Sport Classic Grey. Inside is a mix of new and original, all red custom interior.

What’s under the bonnet?

Rear-mounted 3.0-litre 6-cylinder air-cooled engine. I may add a turbo down the road.

Petrol head or Sunday driver?

Total Sunday driver. I’m not one for sitting in Dublin traffic. And even though an old 911 has as much power as anything on the road, it’s a car for an open road on a sunny day.

What was your first car?

Yellow mini. A wee banger to get me to and from college. Think I sold it for beer money without ever driving it. Students, hey?

What else do/did you own?

A pair of well worn boots.

Dream drive in dream location?

This summer I plan to drive the Wild Atlantic Way and the Ring of Kerry although I’m told parts of the Ring of Kerry are more suitable to a mountain bike.

We’ll see. Just joined Porsche Club Ireland, so I’ll try a few of their outings before I get too brave.

Passenger you’d most like on a long journey?

Comedian Stewart Lee. Keep me entertained, plus he’s a Morrissey head too.

Passenger you’d least like?

Ryan Tubridy. No explanation needed.

What’s on your playlist?

After midnight it has to be the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. For daytime, it’s Nina Simone and the inevitable dashboard air-piano.
