Marie Carthy has told the Barr Tribunal today that the Abbeylara siege would never have got out of control if the gardaí were trained to deal with depression.

Marie Carthy has resumed her evidence to the tribunal set up to investigate the killing of her 27-year-old brother by armed gardaí in April 2001.

Marie Carthy told the Barr Tribunal today that she was not allowed to go to her brother John on the night he was shot at the Abbeylara siege, although she believed he had wanted to see her.

John Carthy's sister, Marie, is questioning why the Garda Emergency Response Unit didn't use non-lethal equipment in their possession to resolve the armed siege, which ended in the shooting dead of her brother in April 2000.

MORE than 200 witnesses have given statements to the Abbeylara Tribunal which is due to begin hearings into the fatal shooting of John Carthy at the end of next month.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern tonight said detailed Government consideration would have to be given to a High Court judgment that could outlaw parliamentary investigations of complaints against the Gardai and other issues.
