Marie Carthy told the Barr Tribunal today that she was not allowed to go to her brother John on the night he was shot at the Abbeylara siege, although she believed he had wanted to see her.

She said gardaí told her it was too dangerous to approach her brother.

Ms Carthy also said she tried calling her brother's mobile phone but got no reply.

The dead man's sister had been drinking hot whiskeys with neighbours because it was a cold night. Gardaí say Marie was under the influence and stopped her from going to her brother.
