A senior Garda has apologised to the Abbeylara Inquiry for referring to the murdered Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane as a republican in a report to the Dáil sub committee.

The Garda Commissioner Pat Byrne said the decision to use firearms is left up to the individual armed members of this force.

The Dáil sub committee inquiry into the death of John Carthy in Abbeylara last year will call its first witnesses later this morning.
