What are the rules about covid tests and isolating these days?

The current guidelines say that for a school-age child, there is no need to test for covid if they are a potential contact

A few of my child's classmates are out of school due to covid. He has recently developed a cough. Am I required to test him for the virus or can I treat it like a normal cough?

Testing for covid has become second nature to most of us over the past three years and has remained a big part of my life professionally.
