As we age, the levels of anti-diuretic hormone, a brain chemical that regulates body fluid and prevents the kidneys from excreting excessive fluid while we’re asleep, starts to wane. 

“It can start as early as 30, but it hits most commonly in your 50s and 60s,” says Dr Michel De Wildt, a consultant urologist at Beacon Hospital in Dublin. “There’s a change in fluid balance and we are more or less forced to go to the toilet at night because the bladder gets full.”
