AHA lotions

Image Skincare Body Spa Rejuvenating Body Lotion, €40, 5/5

This lotion is one tenth glycolic acid, which can be a bit much for sensitive skin. It is extremely important to wear broad-spectrum sun protection daily after any kind of exfoliation. Image’s is an excellent formula for very dry skin, especially that with signs of sun damage as it is rich in reparative antioxidants and glycolic acid acts as a resurfacing agent. It is also high in comforting plant fats, including shea butter and jojoba oil, and contains no alcohol or perfume.

BEST BUY Ameliorate Transforming Body Lotion, €27 at feelunique.com, 5/5

Ameliorate’s is a lactic acid lotion that leaves skin super-soft, thanks in part to the star ingredient’s resurfacing action. The rest is down to hight concentrations of sweet almond and Vitamin E oils. The formula contains a minor amount of perfume.

Filorga Detox Body Treatment, €34 at Marks & Spencer, 4/5

Parisian salon brand Filorga’s lotion also contains glycolic acid, as well as high concentrations of skin-soothing quercetin and super-moisturiser hyaluronic acid. Again the added fragrance may be an issue for sensitive types. The formula does not actively ‘detox’ because skin does not harbour toxins, and is in fact perfectly capable of disposing of them naturally.

Nip+Fab Glycolic Mix Body Cream, €14.99, 4/5

This body cream contains both beta and alpha hydroxy acids, so is capable of tackling both blemishes and their stubborn red remainders. The price is great and it contains a soothing antioxidant extract. This is undermined by a substantial amount of perfume. Given the formula’s considerable exfoliating power, skin may be especially vulnerable to irritation from fragrance.

Body foundation/concealers

MAC Studio Fix Face and Body Foundation, €32, 3/5

Makeup on the body sounds inherently messy but most area-specific formulas are water and transfer-proof. MAC’s offering is not among them and does wear off on clothes by the end of the day. The sheer formula has a radiant-matte finish and comes in a broad range of natural shades, so you may find it delightful for the face. It contains nothing likely to irritate sensitive skin but as a body option I find it impractical.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Maximum Camouflage Coverage Foundation, €40, 5/5

My favourite body makeup. This matte cream suits sensitive skin and provides SPF15. It is formulated to hide every conceivable mark, from tattoos to broken veins, and the shade range is as broad and natural looking as you’d expect of an average facial foundation. It is, however, relatively rich and emollient.

BEST BUY Vita Liberata Body Blur Instant HD Skin Tint, €35.94, 5/5

This has a gel texture and is truly non-transferable. This product often comes up in celebrity makeup artist-interviews, lauded for it’s flaw-diffusing pigments or as a sheer radiant-bronzer alternative. The formula is also irritant-free and contains generous amounts of aloe vera, shea butter and Vitamin E.

Vichy Dermablend Total Body Corrective Foundation 16 hr €32.99, 4/5

If you make up the body to tone down a skin condition I suggest the Lauder option first, but this also provides generous cover with a completely matte finish. The shade range is not as natural, I dislike pink undertones in fair-skin foundations, but the texture is wonderfully light for such a highly-pigmented formula. It shields skin with broad spectrum SPF15.

Leg oils

BEST BUY Fushi Virgin Organic Argan Oil, €14.53, 5/5

This oil contains Vitamins A and E and boosts circulation and cell renewal. Better still, it feels more comforting than the other three. The finish is non-greasy and radiant.

Modern Botany Oil, €35, 4/5

Cork brand Moder Botany combined pure calendula, flax, chamomile and arnica oils for this charming multi-purpose blend. The flax is especially fatty, comforting skin and giving a glow with the other extracts calm and sooth. The price is a little much for just 60ml of product.

Connock London Radiant Glow Body Oil, €40.80 at feelunique.com, 4/5

This oil does give skin a transparent glow and the atomiser creates a pretty veil without wasting product. The formula is high in kukui nut-oil, a potent antioxidant that hydrates even acne-prone skin without overwhelming it with emollience, The considerable amount of fragrance is more likely to be bothersome.

Origins ‘Ginger Gloss’ Smoothing Body Oil, €26, 5/5

This formula lives up to its name, giving skin a pretty gloss with a smooth, non-greasy feel. The spray dries quickly and does not stain delicate fabrics. The mild, refreshing fragrance is unlikely to bother sensitive skin.
