Sartorial smoothies

Brad Pitt and David Beckham no longer take the fashion risks that inspire designers and fans. So who are the new style kids on the block?

Sartorial smoothies

Liam Hemsworth

The Aussie actor has really upped his game since becoming one of Hollywood’s hottest soon-to-be-weds. His promotional appearances for The Hunger Games showcased a new-found love of sleek Italian suits, patterned blazers and skinny ties. The poster boy for Bench men’s wear tells In Style that when off duty, his look is far from flawless. “One day, I’ll put together a cool outfit, and the next, I’ll look like a homeless person. Mostly I’m a T-Shirt and jeans — Levis or Nudie.” Miley Cyrus recently told Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) that her fiancé plans to launch his own clothing line.

Joseph Gordon Levitt

The former child star’s recent career acceleration has coincided with a string of sartorial hits. The Dark Knight Rises star makes the most of his narrow frame with three-piece or double-breasted suits with narrow arms, short lapels and slim-cut trousers. If you share his slight, 5’ 10” physique, a good tailor is your best friend. “Joseph is very meticulous about his clothing and his fit. He’s got a good sense of style,” Sharen Davis, costume designer on his film, Looper. told WWD.

Off screen, he prefers a California preppy meets geek-chic look. Think belted slim jeans or chinos with a patterned shirt, clashing skinny tie and a v-neck wool jumper or blazer.

Ryan Gosling

The Irish Examiner’s Best Dressed Man of 2011 has only improved his red-carpet style this year. Gosling stands out in the sea of tasteful black suits because he mixes it up, bright colours, patterns, velvet, car shoes and contrasting socks, tortoise-shell buttons, bow-ties, skinny ties or no tie. Brown is an unconventional choice for formal-wear, yet Gosling pulls it off here like Thomas Crown Affair-era Steve McQueen.

Off the carpet, he’s emerged in paparazzi shots (and the awesome YouTube clip in which he breaks up a real-life LA street fight) as the male equivalent of Kate Moss: his outfits look thrown together but totally cool.

Get his typical Autumn look in a fitted, fine-cotton tee (preferably with a retro-style front-print), straight-cut indigo denim, a slim black-leather jacket, tortoise-shell aviator shades, a Henley tote and leather ankle boots.

Tinie Tempah

GQ’s Most Stylish Man of the Year 2012 no longer keeps his many clothes at his auntie’s house (as his rhymes suggest) but in a walk-in wardrobe. The rapper’s colourful, hip-hop-inspired suits extend his stage style to the red carpet and mix high-street with high-end.

“At the end of the day I’m 23 and I feel like a lot of people who follow me are pretty much the same age. I want to show people that you can be young and wear a suit,” he tells GQ.

“It’s cool to dress up, it’s cool to want to look nice and there’s ways that you can do it where you don’t look like an old fogey.”

Tinie’s distinctive, non-prescription glasses are by fashion-editor favourite Cutler & Gross.
