The launch of Doireann Ní Ghríofa’s latest book, Said the Dead, drew a sizeable crowd to Waterstones in Cork on Thursday evening.

Ní Ghríofa’s latest offering combines history and ghost story as it gives voice to the women who were incarcerated in a former Cork mental institution that is being converted into apartments.

The Co Clare-raised author has been a resident of Cork for many years. Her previous book, A Ghost in the Throat, was hugely popular, and won several awards, including An Post Irish Book of the Year.

As part of Cork Midsummer Festival on June 14, the author will read from Said the Dead at Atkin's Hall (formerly Our Lady's Psychiatric Hospital) at the Lee Road. The reading will be accompanied by live music from Linda Buckley.
