Seven-time BAFTA Award winner Steve Coogan has had to pull out of the stage production of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on Thursday.

Ticket holders received a text message on Thursday evening to inform them that the actor “is recovering from laryngitis and will not perform 13 Feb 2025 19.30 @BGET”.

No information has yet been released in regard to future performances of a play that's due to run until February 22.

Actor Ben Deery, who is known for And Then There Were None, A Street Cat Named Bob and Baldur's Gate III, will replace Coogan on stage for now.

Ticket holders have also been advised that refunds will be made available at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre before 5pm on Monday, February 17.

Coogan has been appearing in the first-ever adaptation of Kubrick’s work since it opened on February 5.

The black comedy follows a rogue US general who triggers a nuclear crisis and is brought to the stage by acclaimed BAFTA and Emmy Award winner Armando Iannucci and Olivier Award winner Sean Foley, who also directed.

Previously speaking about his role in the adaptation, Coogan said: “The idea of putting Dr Strangelove on stage is daunting. A huge responsibility. It’s also an exciting challenge, an opportunity to bring this timeless classic to a new audience.

“Knowing that I will be part of a creative team led by Sean Foley and Armando Iannucci means I will be working with the best people. Sean is a master of stage comedy and Armando and I started working with each other over 30 years ago.

“We made some memorable comedy together so it’s great to be collaborating with him once again. And we are thrilled to have the opportunity to take our version of this unique story to Dublin – where it will have its Irish Premiere at Dublin’s beautiful Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.”

Bord Gáis Energy Theatre has been contacted for comment.
