Live action from the Premier League features Norwich v Southampton (Sky Pick, ko 6pm, free to air) and Tottenham v Man Utd (Sky Sports, ko 8.15pm). World Cup Gold (TG4, 7.30pm) has the incredible World Cup quarter-final featuring Argentina v England at Mexico 1986, featuring Maradona's famous two goals.

My Brilliant Friend

Sky Atlantic, 9pm

Of course the books were better, but season two of the adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novels will still bring plenty of fans of the tales of life in southern Italy. A double-bill of episodes opens with Lila off on honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast, while Elena is struggling in school.

Later… with Jools Holland

BBC Two, 10pm

Guy Garvey from Elbow links up with the presenter, and selects some of his favourite performances from the Later archive. Last in series.

Selma

BBC Two, 11.20pm

Timely film from 2014 based on the true story of Martin Luther King's civil rights march in Alabama.

SATURDAY

Alice Through The Looking Glass

RTÉ One, 7.05pm

Purists and critics didn't approve of this 2016 adaptation, but Tim Burton did put his own stamp on a tale that has plenty to entertain younger viewers. A star-studded cast includes Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

I Am Not Your Negro

BBC Two, 9pm

A topical documentary that uses the words of American author James Baldwin to explore the lives of black people in the US, including the work and violent deaths of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr and civil rights activist Medgar Evers.

The Battle for Britain's Heroes

Channel 4, 10pm

The recent protests in the UK seem to have at last stirred a debate in that country about some of the questionable figures it celebrates. Inevitably, Winston Churchill is one of the names mentioned, as we hear how, despite leading the campaign against Nazism, he also had some very dodgy opinions on race, and was hands-on in imposing British rule in Ireland and other colonies.

Naval hero Horatio Nelson is also mentioned as being pro-slavery, and there's a visit to Germany to see how they've dealt with aspects of their unsavoury past.

Sport

Premier League fans will have live games to watch every day this week, including several on free-to-air. The most watched of today's matches will be Bournemouth v Crystal Palace ( BBC One, ko 7.45pm), while earlier games feature Watford v Leicester (BT, ko 12.30pm), Brighton v Arsenal (BT, ko 3pm), and West Ham v Wolves (Sky Sports, ko 5.30pm). Horse racing has also resumed, with today's meetings including Royal Ascot (Virgin One, 1.25pm) and Naas (RTÉ2, 5pm).

SUNDAY

Lost Pyramids of the Aztecs

Channel 4, 8pm

One for the archaeology fans, as experts venture into the tunnels beneath an almost forgotten pyramid in Mexico, and also try to build a replica of one of those incredible buildings.

New period drama set in New Zealand in the 1860s, featuring Eva Green and Eve Hewson (Bono's daughter).

Sport

There are three Premier League games on offer: Newcastle v Sheffield Utd (Sky Pick, free to air, ko 2pm); Aston Villa v Chelsea (Sky Sports, 4.15pm), and Everton v Liverpool (Sky Pick, ko 7pm). Horse racing comes from Leopardstown (RTÉ2, 5pm).
