Rugby stars pay tribute to frontline staff at maternity hospital

A host of rugby stars have paid tribute to the frontline workers at The National Maternity Hospital in a video created by a midwife.

Penny Mitchell, who works at Holles Street, was feeling overwhelmed in the fight against Covid-19 at the hospital.

“All I could think of on my way home from another busy shift was, what can I do to help my fellow colleagues to boost their spirits and to help morale across the hospital,” said Penny.

As a huge rugby fan, she reached out to Irish rugby players asking for a message of support for her colleagues.

Former rugby captain Rory Best, Tommy Bowe, Sean Cronin, James Ryan and Andrew Conway are among the stars to respond.

Penny said she hopes all frontline workers can take support from the video.

“The response I received was overwhelming and totally unexpected,” added the midwife.

“I was genuinely in awe when I saw what Penny had created and I hope that her desire to reach every healthcare worker right across the county is realised,” said Prof Shane Higgins, Master at the National Maternity Hospital.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish Penny, all our extraordinary staff at The National Maternity Hospital, patients, families and supporters of the hospital a very Happy Easter, please stay safe everyone.”

    The current restrictions started on Friday, March 27. They mandate that everyone should stay at home, only leaving to:
  • Shop for essential food and household goods;
  • Attend medical appointments, collect medicine or other health products;
  • Care for children, older people or other vulnerable people - this excludes social family visits;
  • Exercise outdoors - within 2kms of your home and only with members of your own household, keeping 2 metres distance between you and other people
  • Travel to work if you provide an essential service - be sure to practice physical distancing
