Summer Events Guide: What's on in August

Here's your summer events guide for the month of August, including all things music, arts and ents.
MUSIC
Arguably the strongest lineup yet for the festival, including synth-rockers Bastille, stadium punks Biffy Clyro and Lewis Capaldi, the Scottish songwriter whose 2019 tour sold out in a heartbeat.
The second year of this festival on the spectacular Waterford estate will have a poignant feel for organisers given the death of founder John Reynolds.
The 52-year-old Dubliner had also set up Electric Picnic, and this new event has the feel of a more compact Picnic, albeit for an older demographic.
The National are the big draw, touring on the back of a superb new album, while the bill also includes Patti Smith, Hot Chip, Father John Misty, and Damon Albarn project The Good, the Bad and the Queen. For those who like house music, Detroit legend Moodymann will also be in attendance. ‘I can’t kick this feeling when it hits.’
As well as All Together Now, the English indie darlings come to Cork Opera House for their first gig in the city since they played the Savoy way back when.

The harbour-side location is a great spot for a festival, and the Bodytonic crew have organised a quality dance-inclined lineup featuring the likes of Groove Armada, Todd Terje and Jungle.
Drogheda becomes the Mecca for purveyors and fans of all things trad-related for the second year in a row, before the 2020 event moves to Mullingar.

A pop music festival aimed at the “LGBT+ community and their many friends”, headliners include Lily Allen, Clean Bandit and Kelis. The great Panti Bliss is on MC duties for the weekend.
Also playing in Belfast, main man Dave Grohl brings his band to Ireland for their fist gig since Slane 2015.

Martin Hayes will be joined by fellow trad music luminaries for the annual event in West Cork.
The American rapper steps up from the indoor arenas to headline his first big outdoor gig in this country.

The parade is still the centrepiece, but there are plenty other events all over the city for this family-focused festival.
The West End production of the hugely popular tale of the twins who grow up in very different circumstances, only to meet again later in life with huge consequences.
The beautiful peninsula in West Cork has long punched above its weight in terms of artistic impact, partly due to the amount of artists who have made their home in the area.
Among the events already announced for this year’s event is an exhibition of paintings by the late John Eagle, and a new visual arts commission on Bere Island by 2018 RDS Taylor Art Award winner Mary Sullivan.

A stage show based on the original comedy film.
Paul Muldoon has long had a reputation as being a highly engaging reader of his poetry in a live setting, and for this stage-show he ups the performance aspect for a cabaret-style evening that will also feature the diverse talents of British author Zadie Smith, Tyrone writer Nick Laird and iconic band Horslips.

As ever, there’s a strong strand of classical music at this year’s festival, including rising star pianist Alexander Gavryluk; and baroque ensemble Orfeo 55 with Nathalie Stutzmann performing a programme of Bach.

An exhibition dedicated to Valencia-born artist Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923) highlights his skill in the depiction of water and light, and shows his influence on the likes of Velázquez and John Singer Sargent.
While other events can roll out attendance numbers and various claims about benefits and legacies, the evidence for this street art festival is there for all to see.
Since its inauguration in 2015, the event has left Waterford with some of the most interesting gable ends this side of the border. It beautifies buildings, boosts the city, attracts tourists, etc, etc.

Cape storytelling stalwart Diarmuid O Drisceoil is flying the flag for Ireland at this years event, with various storytellers also attending from overseas.
Colum Sands from Co Down will provide the music, while puppeteer Dominic Moore will also feature. Workshops, storytelling concerts, a storytelling boat trip, a heritage walk, an island folklore walk, etc.
OTHER
The origins of this goat-centred festival are a matter of debate, but the first written references to the event date from the 17th century.
As well as the crowning of King Puck, a stage truck is driven into the town square every evening for open-air concerts. A huge fireworks is also planned for midnight onthe 12th.
Five days of fun in the Kingdom culminates with the selection of the successor to last year’s winner, Kirsten Mate Maher from Waterford.

Originally launched during the city’s tenure as European City of Culture in 2005, this event has numerous significant buildings around the city throwing their doors open for free visits and guided tours.
It’s a great way to learn about the history of Cork, and have a nose around.
