Runner of the Week: Kevin Betts - 'It’s always great to get back to Cork'

Corkman Kevin Betts is returning from Liverpool next week to take part in the Cork City Marathon.

“I was born and raised under the bells of Shandon, literally, my Mam still lives on Church Street where we grew up,” Kevin said.

“It’s always great to get back to Cork. There’s something new every time but the people don’t change, always great craic. It’s a beautiful city and the support is always fantastic.”

Kevin, 43, will be joined by four of his siblings for the half marathon, including one who is travelling a greater distance.

“It’s only a short hop for me from Liverpool, my sister Stella will be coming back all the way from Dubai. As there are quite a few of us running we are going to take our time and enjoy the scenery.”

Kevin and his family will be raising funds for the Mercy University Hospital Foundation in memory of their father.

They took great care of our Dad, Larry, in his final weeks when he passed away in 2017. They have also used previous funds raised to create a dementia-friendly ward and open a kids zone in the hospital, we think it’s a great cause.

Having done cross-country running while a pupil in the Mon, Kevin took on longer courses in 2011.

“I only got into running again when my cousin James Murphy asked me if I fancied running the Cork Marathon with him a few years ago. I did and really enjoyed it so I’ve been running on and off since then. It’s great to just stick on the trainers and get outside.”

The father-of-three fits his training around his children’s schedules.

“My son Seán trains for football several times a week so I tend to run around the perimeter of the pitch while he’s playing. Our youngest Liam has only two settings, asleep and 100mph, so keeping up with him is great for cardio.”
