Here's how Amsterdam is planning to ban all polluting vehicles by 2030

The city of Amsterdam has announced plans to make traffic in the city free of emissions by 2030 in a new 'Clean Air Action Plan'.

The emphasis of the plan is on making traffic cleaner, and to replace petrol and diesel engines to be replaced by emission-free alternatives such as electric transport and hydrogen-powered propulsion.

The municipality of Amsterdam outlined a timeline with four key milestones in how they hope to achieve this:

2020: There will be an environmental zone for diessel passenger cars within the A10 ring road that diesel cars 15 years or older will not be allowed to enter.

2022: There will be an emission-free area for public transport buses and coaches within the s100 south of Amsterdam Central Station and railways. The environmental zone will only be accessible for vehicles with the Euro 6 emissions standard or higher.

2025: Mopeds and light mopeds that are not emission-free will no longer be allowed in the built-up area. Within the A10 ring road, there wiill be an emission-free area for trucks and delivery vans, taxis, public transport buses and coaches.

2030: Vehicles that are not emission-free will no longer be allowed in the built-up area. This will also apply to passenger cars and motorbikes.

The plan recognised that costs and inconveniences for residences will naturally result, and so will offer subsidies and exemption schemes such as an allowance towards the purchase of a cleaner method of transport. Those who do so will also be offered parking permits.

Anyone who purchases an electric car in Amsterdam can request a charging station through the Municipality of Amsterdam.

The Clean Air Action Plan will be discussed by Amsterdam's city council at the end of the month and invites its residents to join in on the conversation via a digital platform.
