Five scientists to represent Ireland at event with Nobel-prize winning physicists

Five Irish scientists, three of which are Cork based, have been selected by the Irish Research Council to represent the country in the 69th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Germany this summer.

Also in attendance at the week-long conference in Lindau will be up to 40 Nobel Prize-winners, hundreds of PhD students and researchers across the world.

This year's focus will be on cosmology, particle physics and quantum technology.

The five scientists will represent researchers based at University College Cork, the University of Limerick and Trinity College.

The successful candidates are:

Niamh Kavanagh: from the Tyndall Institute at University College Cork. Her research focuses on designing, building and optimising an optical communications system to provide alternatives for future high-capacity, high-speed internet growth

Dr Christopher A.Broderick: from the Tyndall Institute at University College Cork. His research focuses on condensed matter theory and computational physics.

Dr Vikakumar V Jadhav: from the Tyndall Institute at Universtity College Cork, whose research focuses on the field of energy storage and material physics.

Dr Sarah Gurenin: from the Bernal Institute at University of Limerick, whose research focuses on developing molecular modelling tools to predict electronic structures and certain responses of molecular crystals

Dr Adam Kelly: from Trinity College, whose research focuses on developing printed electronics from solution-processed 2D materials

Director of the Irish Research Council Peter Brown said the annual Lindau Nobel Laureate meetings are a unique opportunity for the next generation of scientists to interact with some of the world’s most accomplished scientists.

The Lindau Foundation partners with science and research agencies worldwide to identify talented early-career researchers to attend.

The 69th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting will take place from June 30 to July 5 2019 and will be attended by scientists and Nobel Laureates from 88 different countries.
