6.30am

I have two small children, Riain (two) and Annabel (five months) — they act as my wake-up call. I give my wife Sabrina, who is on maternity leave, a hand with the feeding before heading to the clinic, a five- minute drive from home.

8.30am

I do a walk-through of the clinic and talk to the practice manager.

We’ve had a busy few weeks in the lead up to the opening of the urgent care centre on June 11.

It’s designed as an alternative to busy hospital emergency departments where patients often endure long waits, so we are very focussed on patient flow.

This means ensuring patients have rapid access to imaging, such as x-ray and MRI. Alliance Medical is a clinical partner and it provides the imaging diagnostics.

11am

We have a team of three nurses and three doctors and I check-in with them to ensure everything is running smoothly.

We treat minor injuries and illnesses — not life-threatening emergencies — for patients aged 12 months-plus. An emergency medicine consultant, Martin Rochford, will provide full clinical oversight.

We expect to treat a lot of paediatric and elderly patients for whom long waiting times can be particularly stressful. Our aim is to have all patients seen within 30 minutes and treated within one hour.

Lunch

Usually ‘al desco’, although I try to get out for a walk.

2pm

I have a business meeting with my father, Ger, who is the CEO of MyMedical, and my brother, Keith, who is operations director.

It’s a family business.

3pm

I’m responsible for marketing, so part of my day usually involves meeting with advertisers, as well as developing marketing material.

I also liaise with various health insurers.

MyMedical is an insurance partner with Laya Healthcare and Irish Life Health, but the service is not restricted to these companies.

It is also open to public patients who can pay when they attend.

The initial doctor consultation costs €130, which includes prescription and pain medication, but not imaging.

6.30pm

I’ve had a few late nights in the run-up to our opening, but I aspire to be home before 7pm to give my wife a break.

I try to fit in golf at the weekend and I play five-a-side soccer once a week.
