Connemara has honored Martin McDonagh with three billboards

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past month, you wouldn’t have heard that Martin McDonagh’s movie ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ is one of the most-talked-about movies this award season.

Not only has it taken home four Golden Globes, five BAFTAs and three Critic Choice Awards, it’s been tipped to pick up the prestigious Best Picture Award at this year’s Academy Awards.

Although McDonagh was born in the UK, both his parents are Irish and he holds dual-citizenship.

His mother hails from Killeenduff, County Sligo while his father is from Lettermullan, a small village in Connemara, County Galway.

To honor McDonagh’s success the Heritage Center in Lettermullan has erected three billboards outside the town with words of congratulations.

“Comhghairdeas Martin McDonagh,” the first one reads.

While “Réalt Mór Leitir Mealláin” is displayed on the second and “Réalt Mór Hollywood” on the third.

Which translates into “Lettermullan Star; Hollywood Star”.

The 90th Academy Awards ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on March 4.
