Paralysed groom walks down the aisle thanks to high-tech kit

Matt Ficarra had one massive goal in mind after getting engaged to his girlfriend Jordan Basile last December - he was going to walk down the aisle with his new bride.

Ficarra, from Baldwinsville in New York state, has been partially paralysed after a boating accident in 2011 left him with a broken neck.

Matt, 30, vowed to his father Frank that he would not roll down the aisle to his new bride in his wheelchair.

"I told myself that I would walk with my bride down the aisle,” Frank told Syracuse.com.

Ficarra had a long road ahead, quite literally, as his plan meant he would have to travel seven hours every week to the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network based in Allentown, Pennsylvania over 200 miles away.

Matt’s reason for going there was to learn to use their Ekso device in order to aid him to walk again.

An Ekso is a bionic exoskeleton that is strapped to the patient's torso, legs and feet.

Sensors help to make sure the joints move in the right direction and a walker is used to aid balance.

The groom undertook months of training to learn to use the device and is now able to walk nearly a mile in it.

As Matt miraculously made his way into the room the guests gave him a rousing reception and his fiancé struggled to hold in the tears as she joined him at the altar.

After being declared husband and wife, Matt and Jordan then fulfilled the new groom’s dream as they made their way back down the aisle together.

They are now off to Jamaica for their honeymoon.

Well done Matt and we hope you guys have a happy life together.
