'Gerry's Story' - Touching tribute video to anti-smoking campaigner Gerry Collins released

The former Dublin footballer - who died from lung cancer last March - made this short film with his family as part of the HSE's QUIT campaign.

The HSE have released this short film honouring the late anti-smoking campaigner, Gerry Collins. The seven minute video is a final tribute to Gerry and includes interviews with him, his family and his friends.

Gerry passed away from lung cancer last March, aged 57. Before his death, he had became the face of the HSE's QUIT campaign, through a series of powerful ads sharing his story.

Even while battling terminal cancer, he touched the hearts of many with his honest and brave account of his illness.

Shortly before his death, he recorded this video with his family and friends. It is a final, powerful testament to this inspiring man and his message. While it is primarily directed to smokers, it is a story that can speak to us all.

The HSE estimates that 100,000 people have tried to quit smoking since Gerry's ads began in January.

In the video, Gerry reflects on what he's grateful for in life.

"I try and find gratitude every day."

"I’m grateful for my kids – I’ve good family and friends around me, I’m grateful for lots. I’m a happy enough man."
