Journalist reports on mystery marriage proposal - and finds out it's meant for her

Maryanne Firth is a reporter for Canadian newspaper, the Welland Tribune, and like most reporters, she loves a good mystery.

So when she starting noticing dozens of signs that had begun popping up all over town - each decorated with a big pink heart - she became obsessed with finding out what they were for.

Other residents of Welland had seen them too but no one could explain where they were coming from. Maryanne wrote a story about the pink hearts but was none the wiser about their origin.

Last week, new signs began appearing next to the existing ones indicating that something was going to happen on Sunday at 3pm in a local park.

It just so happened that Firth was schedued to work that weekend and she was determined to get to the bottom. Writing in the Welland Tribune, she decribes what happened last Sunday.

"I arrived at the park, slung my camera bag over my shoulder and headed over to a pop-up tent set up near one of the park's pavilions".

"Despite the rain, dozens of people came out with umbrellas in hand, all eager to satisfy the same curiosity that had been eating away at me for weeks".

Under the pop-up tent, a man was standing with a wooden box over his head. On the box was painted yet another of the pink hearts. The mystery man was handing out flowers to the people that had gathered around.

"He handed one to me — a sweet, but familiar gesture — and then continued passing them out to others. Then he gathered up the remaining flowers into a bouquet and turned to me. He removed the disguise", said Maryanne.

This was the man who I've loved for the past eight years. Who I've built a life with. This was all for me".

"Ryan got down on one knee and as I tried unsuccessfully to hold back tears, he asked me to spend the rest of my life with him."

Maryanne said yes (of course!) and thinks that Ryan St. Denis, her fiance, knows her better than she knows herself.

"He knew I'd see the signs. He knew I'd be curious. And he knew my nose for news would drive me to unearth the secret", she said.

"How he kept it from me all this time, I'll never know".

And, of course, after all that Maryanne still had to write the story.

Talk about getting the inside scoop!
