Today's TV tips

DOCUMENTARY: Jigs and Wigs (RTE One, 8.30pm – 9pm)

JIGS & WIGS is a new six part documentary series which looks at the extreme world of Irish dancing, a world that is constantly evolving.

With the global success of Riverdance – 20 years old this year – Irish dance is an art form that has been thrust onto the world stage.

The result is that there are far more Irish dancers across the globe than there are in Ireland.

However, international influences have changed the tradition and the rule book – the genie is out of the bottle and everyone is getting in on the action. It’s showbiz!

JIGS & WIGS features some of the more unusual individuals and their stories which make Irish dancing a vibrant and progressive entertainment phenomenon.

REALITY; Booze Patrol Down Under (TV3, 8.30pm – 9pm)

Follow the police units down under for a unique, behind-the-scenes look at Random Breath Test patrols testing for alcohol and drug-affected drivers.

From major roadside drink-driving operations and mobile breath testing, to high-speed pursuits and drivers under the influence of drugs, Booze Patrol Down Under captures all the drama and danger that police face every day in their relentless campaign against drink driving.

REALITY: Don't Tell the Bride (RTE Two, 9.30pm – 10.30pm)

Junior and Sasha first met one another seven years ago when they joined as cabin crew with Ryanair.

The couple, have two little girls, Ana (4 yrs) and Wendy (11mths). Life revolves around the children and they cannot wait to include them on their big day.

Junior has strong Spanish tastes and that is Sasha’s main fear. Spanish weddings are very different to a traditional Irish wedding.

She is hoping he won’t put her in a flamenco dress and is hoping the budget won’t allow him to plan a Spanish style wedding.

Junior is focused on getting everything for as cheap as possible, he has the gift of the gab and will haggle on all prices. Will he deliver the traditional type of wedding that Sasha so craves?

COMEDY: The Walshes (RTE One, 10.15pm – 10.55pm)

The Walshes are a warm, tight knit family from the West Dublin suburb of Strollinstown.

Tony (Niall Gaffney) and Carmel (Philippa Dunne) are parents to Ciara (Amy Stephenson) and Rory (Rory Connolly), who are both still at home because the state of the Irish economy has forced them all back together.

Episode 1: ‘Doctor Burger’

After weeks of putting it off, Ciara finally agrees to bring her new boyfriend, Graham, back to meet her family. All she wants is a quick, in and out visit: no fuss and no embarrassment.

The Walshes however, don’t do ‘no fuss’. Graham must navigate a social assault course of misunderstandings, Dad jokes and utter humiliation.

Meanwhile, Tony has a very important TV show that he just can’t miss and Rory has a big secret that he mustn’t reveal.

REALITY: The Big Reunion 2014 (ITV2, 9pm – 10pm)

Last year’s novel-sounding The Big Reunion garnered so much attention during the run of the series that now-30-year-old-women (and older) were forgetting their age, packing out arenas in their personalised t-shirts and screaming for their favourite band just as they had done in their teens.

It was a genius idea that has fast-tracked some of the best bands of the 1990s back in to the limelight (after plenty tears and tantrums while getting there).

This second series hasn’t quite had the same impact as its predecessor, but it’s certainly made for compelling viewing – especially when it comes to the newly formed boy band 5th Story and all the tales they’ve got to tell.

In the latest episode, the lads are hitting the record store for the first time, but there are doubts over whether they will gel together. Meanwhile, Damage and Girl Thing are put under the spotlight during their explosive reunions.

FILM: Fantastic Mr Fox (Film4, 7.15pm – 9pm)

(2009) Stop-motion animated adventure about a rebellious fox who decides it is high time he grew up and changed his chicken-stealing ways for the sake of his wife and children.

However, when three wicked farmers relocate to his wood, Mr Fox finds his pride getting the better of him and he struggles to resist the urge to teach them a lesson they won’t soon forget.

The works of Roald Dahl have delighted children and adults alike for many decades – and so great and accessible are his stories there isn’t a single bad film adaptation among them.

From Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory to The Witches, they’ve been a success every time.

This book-to-screen reworking is no different. Charming, funny, and visually stylish, it’s hard not to be won over by this fun adventure.

Starring: George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray
