New balls please!

It’s usually a cry heard at Wimbledon, but there was no shortage of footballs at the Moyle Rovers GAA Grounds in Clonmel on Saturday as the Tipperary Ladies Gaelic Football Association attempted to break the world record for the ‘Largest Football Mosaic’.

Over 300 people representing 25 Ladies Football clubs in the county joined together to try and beat the previous record held by BMO Bank of Montreal in Toronto with a total area of 57.92m² in July 2012.

An astounding 1530 balls where carefully placed to spell out ‘The Horse & Jockey’, a local hotel who are the team sponsor for the Tipperary Intermediate Ladies Team and everyone who took part received a certificate of participation.

They may still awaiting official confirmation from the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ but it would seem that they achieved their goal, smashing the previous record by almost 19 metres with their mosaic coming in at a whopping 76.9m².

The aim of course was to raise funds and promote the game within Tipperary but the biggest question on our minds was what happened to all the balls after the record attempt?

Assistant Tipperary Ladies Football PRO, Michelle Donnelly set us straight. “All those there were offered a ball to take home as a reminder of the occasion and a great day was had by all. We still have a few balls left over though, I don’t know what we are going to do with them all”.
