The Sammon of College: Five facts about Trap's latest call up
Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni today announced that Conor Sammon is set to make his full competitive debut for the Republic of Ireland.
Should you find yourself in a pub quiz tonight, we've pulled together some little-know facts about the Derby County man:
After beginning his professional career with a scholarship deal at UCD, fans of the team bestowed the nickname ‘Sammon of College’ on the former Cherry Orchard front man.

While at UCD Sammon held down a full-time position as a teller in Bank of Ireland for a year. No wonder the country is gone to pot after losing out on his financial wizardry...

Many were surprised when the big man moved to Kilmarnock from Derry City having not featured regularly for the Candystripes.
It took him a couple of seasons to settle in Scotland but he soon found his feet, hitting 18 goals in the SPL before a January 2011 move to the Premier League with Wigan.
Things at Wigan didn’t really go to plan for Conor. He only managed a single Premier League goal in 32 appearances for the Latics, but it was a lovely finish.
Derby looks to be the right fit for Sammon and his form brought him to the attention of Trapattoni, who handed him his first start in the friendly win over Poland in February.
Hopefully for the Dublin-born striker he can display the kind of clinical finishing shown above, as he takes a great leap into the unknown against Austria.
