Walters hits out at TV talent shows
Screen star Julie Walters has hit out at the makers of TV talent shows, accusing them of exploiting contestants.
The Harry Potter actress also complained that todayâs schedules contained too many reality shows.
Asked what makes her angry, Walters, 62, told the Radio Times: âThat thereâs not enough drama being made. Weâve got too many reality shows, but thatâs probably just a fashion so Iâm waiting for things to swing back.
âI also get very angry that vulnerable people appear in the audition stages of TV talent shows. I think itâs sad that peopleâs real vulnerabilities are being exploited. They simply shouldnât be there.â
Walters is not the first star to lambast TV talent shows.
Earlier this year, Paul Weller criticised so-called âedgyâ aspiring singers who chase success by auditioning on the shows.
The former Jam frontman called TV talent shows âSaturday-night viewing for the massesâ, adding: âWould I be a judge? Would I hell.â
Elton John has also said that he is ânot a fan of talent showsâ, adding: âI probably wouldnât have lasted if Iâd gone on one. I was asked to judge American Idol.â
Walters also told the magazine that she is a âsoap addictâ and would like to appear in Coronation Street, EastEnders or Emmerdale.
âI did once mention that Iâd love a part in Corrie, and they were immediately on the phone to various agents. But I think that might have to wait for later in my career now,â she said.
