‘The Tourist’ a decent date movie

Director: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck

Cast: Johnny Depp, Anjelina Jolie, Paul Bettany

A strong enough re-make of the 2005 French thriller – though still lacking that certain style that the French can give their films, specially their thrillers – given substance by a strong cast and the backcloth of scenic Venice.

Depp plays broken-hearted American Frank, in Italy to get over his romantic disappointments, who falls under the spell of Elise (Jolie) who uses him to hide her search for a wanted criminal who did her wrong … and trying to shake off agent Acheson (Bettany) and several others with evil in mind.

All of which makes for a busy yarn with the added attraction of Elise being sophisticated and Frank being, well not … opposites attracting.

Somehow it manages to hold together to emerge as one of those satisfying movies that make for a good Saturday evening date … the guy will like Jolie and the gal will like Depp. Simple as that.
