Wagner awaits results after Cole row

Controversial 'X Factor' contestant Wagner Carrilho will discover tonight if he has made it through to the next stage of the competition following an on-screen row with Cheryl Cole.

The Geordie judge hit back at the Brazilian performer on last night’s live show after he made unfavourable comments about her council estate roots.

During an interview, Wagner said Cole was “just a girl from a council estate who got lucky”.

Last night, the 'X Factor' judge did not remark on Wagner’s medley of Beatles hits 'Get Back', 'Hippy Hippy Shake' and 'Hey Jude', but instead took the opportunity to hit back.

She told him: “I think you made some comments this week about me being from a council estate.

“I am very proud of my roots and I am very lucky.”

Wagner, who was wearing a jacket similar to Paul McCartney’s on the sleeve of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, tried to defend himself and said: “I didn’t know the guy was a journalist.

“He asked me what I think of Cheryl and I said Cheryl is a role model for the young people of this nation because I believe she has lived on a council estate and so many people who live in a council estate don’t believe they can achieve a better standard of living.

“You are incredibly talented and beautiful and you have the manners of a princess.

“You are now the most favoured woman in the whole country.”

Later tonight Wagner will discover if he has made it through to the final seven acts of the show.

During an interview he told the Daily Mirror: “Cheryl has never spoken to me properly, but that’s OK.

“She’s just a girl from a council estate who got lucky when someone gave her a job in showbusiness.”

Cole, then Cheryl Tweedy, grew up on an estate in Tyneside before she caught her big break in 'Popstars: The Rivals' when she was chosen to join pop band Girls Aloud in 2002.

She has gone on to have a hugely successful career with the band and is now a chart-topping solo artist.

Yesterday’s show saw the eight remaining contestants take on tracks by The Beatles.

At the start of the show, Fab Four legend McCartney wished the singers luck with the show.

“I hear you’re doing Beatles’ songs this week,” he said in a video clip.

“It was great writing the songs, and it’s a great tribute that you’re doing them tonight. Relax, have fun and just get on with it.”

Katie Waissel, sporting a new brown cropped haircut, made a fierce attempt to save herself from being in the bottom two of for a fourth time.

The singer attempted to win over viewers with a rendition of 'Help!'

Cole said: “That was the best performance of the night.”

“Lyrically it was genius,” said Simon Cowell.

Louis Walsh added: “I love the fact that you sang a song called Help.

“You need help because people are not voting for you and I don’t know why.”

The 24-year-old has been forced to sing for survival on three other occasions after coming in the bottom two after viewers’ votes were counted.

Bookmakers William Hill said she is currently joint favourite to be voted off the show along with Wagner with odds of 13/8.

Paije Richardson, who sang 'Let It Be', bounced back after negative comments from the judges last week.

Walsh compared the 20-year-old to Marvin Gaye and Cole added: “There was something really angelic and beautiful about your performance, I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Cher Lloyd got a standing ovation from her mentor Cole when she took on John Lennon’s solo track 'Imagine'.

“Your vocal is not to be under-estimated,” said Cole.

Cowell criticised the stage production which featured the 17-year-old sitting on a spiral staircase wearing a floaty white tunic dress.

He said it might not appeal to her younger fan base.

Host Dermot O’Leary said Matt Cardle showed “painter and decorator chic” in his white vest and dark baggy trousers during his performance of 'Come Together'.

Cowell said: “It looked like you were dragged from the loo on to the stage to do a performance.”

Young boyband One Direction performed 'All You Need Is Love' but the judges’ comments about the quintet’s performance were drowned out by screaming fans.

Scouser Rebecca Ferguson sang a moving rendition of the ballad 'Yesterday'.

Cowell told her: “What I love about you is that I feel that you mean the words of the song.

“For you coming from Liverpool, that was a perfect tribute to them (The Beatles).”

However, both Cowell and Dannii Minogue said the mother-of-two seemed nervous on stage.

Former supermarket worker Mary Byrne sang 'Something'.

Minogue told her: “Mary, when you are on it, you are on it. That was up there with your best performances.”
