Scorsese 'passionate about 3D movies'

Director Martin Scorsese was keen to shoot his new movie ‘Hugo Cabret’ in 3D because it creates a different feel to a movie, the movie's editor has said.

“He’s always been passionate about 3D and, as a matter of fact, we’ve started screening older 3D movies,” said Thelma Schoonmaker.

“We looked at ‘Avatar’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ then we looked at the older ones, and we love them.

“Hitchcock’s ‘Dial M For Murder’ in 3D is a whole other movie. There’s only one really dramatic shot that is 3D in the sense that most people think of it – Grace Kelly’s being strangled, the camera’s behind her, and she reaches back for the scissors. And that’s a beautiful 3D Shot.”

However, she also confirmed the decision to shoot ‘Hugo Cabret’ using the technique was something Scorsese thought about for a long time.

She revealed to Empire: “We’ll have to screen, I think, earlier, maybe an entire scene and see whether the 3D is working properly, because Scorsese talks a lot about the philosophy of 3D: ‘Why are you using, it, how do you use it?’ Which is typical of him. He thinks very deeply about these type of things.”

‘Hugo Cabret’ – which stars Jude Law, Sacha Baron Cohen, Chloe Moretz and Ben Kingsley – is due for cinematic release in December 2011.
