'Baaria' lacks foundation or depth

Tornatore attempts to fashion a personal storyline built around a Sicillian family, the multi-generation Torrenuovas, but somehow forgets to include an emotional drive that takes the film forward and fails to leave the watcher with anything worth considering.

The film involves the Mafia hating Peppinno (Scianna) who in the aftermath of WW2 joins the Communist Party but gets, understandably, distracted by local beauty, Mannina (Made) … this set against the beauty of the island but given no solid foundation or depth.
