Bernal: New movie is 'provocative'

Gael Garcia Bernal says his new movie ‘Mammoth’ is “provocative”.

The Mexican actor – who was directed by Swedish filmmaker Lukas Moodysson on the new film – knew it would be both challenging and “confrontational” because he was working with such a controversial director.

He said: "I definitely knew that it was going to be a confrontational film, that it was going to be provocative in a certain way. I really liked this movie after reading the script.

“Lukas profiles people in a sharp, vulnerable way that many people can find irritating, while many others can love.”

The movie follows a successful couple – Gael portraying an internet entrepreneur, and actress Michelle Williams playing his surgeon wife – and their eight-year-old daughter as they question what is really important to them.

The 30-year-old actor – whose girlfriend Dolores Fonzi gave birth to their first son Lazaro in January –approached the role differently once he became a father.

He explained: "Becoming a father is a lot like, I don't know, going underwater. The first time you go into the sea it completely changes your relationship with the water. The same happens when you become a father, it changes everything that has to do with work, and much more so in my life. I don't know if it's better or worse, but it's definitely different.

"I think all movies are generally a challenge. Maybe the ones that are the biggest challenges are the most appetising for me."
