A shocking event is set to wreak havoc on Wisteria Lane as hit US TV show 'Desperate Housewives' enters its sixth season.

Series creator Marc Cherry has revealed that a plane crash will kill several characters on the Lane, which will be completely destroyed in the shocking crash, which will leave several people – including a "fan favourite" – dead.

He said: "It’s going to be my cliffhanger for the first half of the season. It will affect everyone’s lives."

In another twist, the plane that crashes into Wisteria Lane is rumoured to be an ‘Oceanic Airlines’ flight, named after the fictional airline in TV show 'Lost'.

A source said: "We're looking at ways to find more fun crossovers between shows, and so the idea came up to have the 'Desperate Housewives' plane be Oceanic."

It is not the first time a plane crash has wreaked havoc on a TV show.

In 1993, an air accident helped writers revamp 'Emmerdale Farm' – as the ITV soap was then known – by introducing new characters and scenery.
