‘Mesrine: Killer Instinct’ an engrossing film

Director: Jean-Francois Richet

Cast: Vincent Cassel, Gerard Depardieu, Cecile De France

Cert: 16

A powerful bio – the first of a two-parter – of the rise of French gangster Jacques Mesrine, first encountered as a soldier interrogating terrorists in 1950s Algeria and on his return to Paris where he falls under the influence of hood boss Guido (Depardieu).

It is a film destined to become a classic of its kind, and how well the French do gangster films. And Cassel is truly outstanding in his portrayal of a man born to be evil.

Richet constantly strives, however, to look beyond the deeds in search of the reasons why his character became what he is.

A terrific, atmospheric and engrossing film.
