A stage being built for a Madonna concert in Marseilles collapsed today killing one person and injuring six others.

The city’s fire department said the stage at the Stade Velodrome stadium fell apart on top of several workers.

The six injured were taken to local hospitals. Details of their injuries and the identity of the dead worker were not released.

The cause of the stage collapse was not clear. The area was barricaded after the accident.

Madonna is due to perform in Marseille on Sunday.

Madonna’s spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg said: “During construction of the stage for Madonna’s scheduled July l9 Sticky & Sweet show at the Velodrome Stadium in Marseille France, the roof accidentally fell causing injury to seven workers and one death.

“Madonna who was in Udine, Italy at the time was given the news as she finished her sound check on a different stage at the Stadio Friuli.”

Madonna said in a statement: “I am devastated to have just received this tragic news. My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news.”
