Del Toro: 'Che Guevara was a warrior'
Benicio Del Toro has become such a big fan of Ernesto 'Che' Guevara after playing the revolutionary in director Steven Soderbergh's four-hour epic, he's keen to defend the leader from his critics.
The actor spent months reading up on Guevara and is now convinced Che was "a warriorâ with a very bad reputation.
He says: "I remember Che being included in a TV show that showed pictures of terrorists. I was like, âWhy isnât (President Richard) Nixon there for the Vietnam war?â Youâd have to put a lot of pictures of other people there before youâd put Cheâs.â
Del Toro tells Latina magazine he thinks the revolutionary was just like Batman: "We tell stories about Batman, and he was a type of Batman. No one can deny that he was trying to stop man exploiting man. Whether he was successful or not...
"Two people who I met learned how to read and write because of him. It was really moving... The most revealing thing was that he (Guevara) was a human being."
