Boston Irish Film Festival to honour Boorman

Award-winning filmmaker John Boorman is to be honoured at the Boston Irish Film Festival.

Boorman, who lives near Roundwood in Co Wicklow, will also receive a special lifetime achievement award at the event next month.

A week-long retrospective of the director’s work will also be screened at the Harvard Film Archive in Boston.

Titles expected to feature include 'The General', 'Excalibur', 'Deliverance' and 'Hope and Glory'.

Boorman began his career in British television before graduating to film with the classic crime drama, 'Point Blank' starring Lee Marvin in 1967.

Since then, Boorman has directed a wide variety of movies including 'The Tailor of Panama' (2001).

Boorman has also turned the camera on his adopted homeland, such as in 1998’s 'The General', which starred Brendan Gleeson as real-life Dublin crimelord Martin Cahill.

The Film Festival has honoured filmmaker Jim Sheridan and actors Gabriel Byrne and Aidan Quinn in previous years.
