Lee gets bogged down with Lust, Caution

Lust, Caution

Director: Ang Lee

Cast: Tony Leung, Tang Wei, Joan Chen

Cert: 18

Lee certainly makes interesting films – Brokeback Mountain for one – and certainly never stints on bringing his audiences a rich mixture of visual and emotional delights. Sometimes, though, he gets bogged down and side-tracked, as here.

It is China l942 and a group of actors come together to ruin the evil plans of a man who recruits locals to the side of the invading Japanese. They select a beautiful colleague to infiltrate the evil one’s home … and his bed, where naturally she falls in love – lust – with him.

The film is beautiful to look at, is raw with sexual tension, is bitter-sweet … but it does take a long time to go anywhere.
