Southland Tales has a troubled past

This one comes with something of a troubled past involving script and thumbs-down from the critics. Yet, totally confusing though it is, there is enough in it to sustain interest and leave you with the feeling that a lot more could have been made of the overly-complex plotting.

There is almost too much happening - the story revolves around a group of odd-ball characters in LA (so what did you expect?) - and too many under-cooked characters to allow you to get a grip on the thing. Yet you do get rare glimpses of what might have been lurking in the confused jumble.
