‘Water’ a powerful Indian film
Deepa Mehta’s ‘Water’ (Metrodome; €24.99) is a powerful Indian film about oppression. Events are set in train when eight-year-old Chuyia is cast into an ashram — a Hindu home for widows.
It’s a grim existence for any woman let alone a young girl who never met her husband.
Angered by her situation, Chuyia (Sarayala) stirs up unrest among the women by refusing to accept a life of misery, and has an effect on others, particularly the beautiful Kalyani (Lisa Ray) who is exploited by her fellow widows.
A beautifully haunting film which completes Mehta’s trilogy (Fire and Earth were the other two).
Extras include a couple of featurettes and some deleted scenes.
4/5.
