They’re talking Oscars for Jolie, and certainly her impressive performance in this outstanding drama deserves it.
Based on a true story, she plays the wife of a Stateside journalist – Daniel Pearl (Futterman) – who was kidnapped by Pakistani terrorists. Her efforts to find out what exactly happened and the efforts of the local police to do so as well, as much to avoid political embarrassment as anything else, make for a gripping story.
Winterbottom brings home a gem of a film, full of tension and pace and excellent all-round performances. It is, too, a deeply thoughtful film in which the kidnappers are portrayed as more than mere terrorists.
Oscar nods all round.
