Kings

Director: Tom Collins

Cast: Colm Meaney, Brendan Conroy, Donal O’Kelly

Cert: 15

Based on a stage play this Irish film – in Irish and English and being talked up as a possible entry for the Oscars Best Foreign Language category – is a fine example of solid ensemble playing but an example of the difficulty of translating stage to screen in that it often gets bogged down with chat.

The story concerns a group of ex-pats assembled in London’s Kilburn for the funeral of a friend who has died in mysterious circumstances. There is much soul-searching and introspection, all conducted by a cast that makes the most of the fine writing but is hampered by the lack of things to do.

Still, it would make a worthy Oscar contender, the first ever Irish language film to do so.

Star Rating: 3/5
