Russell Crowe has slammed fellow Australian Baz Luhrmann for failing to pay for stables the actor built for him.

Horse riding enthusiast Crowe set up the stables on his ranch near Sydney for Luhrmann's forthcoming outback epic 'Australia' - and was secretly hoping the move would secure him a role in the movie.

But Crowe failed to land the role and was left to foot the bill for the newly assembled stables.

He says: "I was going to be in that film and I was happy to build the stables. But the way things turned out we didn't do it together - and no one's paid me."

'Australia' stars Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman.
