The Painted Veil is well worth catching

W. Somerset Maugham’s 1920’s love story – set in China – is lovingly brought to the screen in what is a thoughtful and keenly-observed film, beautifully acted by a superb cast.

Watts plays the upper-class wife of middle-class doctor Norton who, upon learning that she has had an affair, takes a job in a remote Chinese village, taking her along as an act of revenge.

But it is not only the dangerous journey to the village that the unhappy couple undertake; it is the journey of self-discovery and redemption they experience.

It is a moving love story, well worth catching.
