Royal watchers taken unawares by Wills' break-up
Veteran royal watchers said today news of Prince William's break-up with Kate Middleton had taken them by surprise.
They said the constant media attention was probably not the main factor in the split, suggesting that the relationship had simply run its course.
But PR guru Max Clifford said it had become âincreasingly obviousâ in recent months that William wanted to go out and enjoy himself.
He also speculated that a third person might be involved, adding: âMy instinct tells me that there is somebody else in the background.â
Judy Wade, royal correspondent for Hello! Magazine, said she was âabsolutely shockedâ at the separation.
âSo recently weâve seen them looking so happy together at the rugby and at Cheltenham,â she said. âShe was absolutely perfect.â
She said Kateâs parents would probably be most disappointed by the young coupleâs decision to go their separate ways.
âI donât particularly blame the harassment of the press,â she said. âI think Kateâs been living in limbo, neither Royal nor commoner any longer. Itâs been very difficult for her.
âWilliam could have solved her problems by marrying her or announcing their engagement. She thought: âEither marry me or Iâm offâ. I think thatâs the main reason â she was tired of life in limbo, even though she seemed perfect for it and seemed to be coping brilliantly.â
Ms Wade said William was âjust not readyâ for marriage, but added: âLetâs not rule out a reconciliation when he realises what he has lost.â
She said: âI think probably Kate has made a wise move. Itâs a horrendous life - you do have this intolerable scrutiny and you donât get a chance to retire. She will be better off with some rich unknown gentleman living in the country.â
Mr Clifford said it would be the âbiggest kiss and tell in historyâ if Kate sold her story to a newspaper.
But he added: âShe would never do it â Iâm sure she wouldnât even dream of doing it. But sheâs in that position of being the hottest kiss and tell property in history. Iâve already had contacts from various national newspapers saying: âIf she comes to you, tell usâ.â
He said the split had not surprised him, adding: âI think itâs become increasingly obvious in recent months that he wants to be out and about enjoying himself. To me itâs become more and more obvious that this was possibly going to happen.â
Mr Clifford speculated that William might already have found a new love.
He said: âThatâs just something that goes through my mind, that maybe heâs met somebody else. In the weeks and months ahead they would be gradually seen â certainly it wonât be in the next few weeks.â
Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, said the young couple had probably âgot to a stage in their relationship where they couldnât go forwardsâ.
âI was surprised. They have split up before but it was very much kept under wraps,â she said. âObviously this time somebody wants the world to know â I canât imagine it was her.â
She said it was probably a âvery emotionalâ split, adding that the royal family would be sad about it because Kate was well-liked.
She added: âThey were almost a married couple when they were together at university. Since then it's been a lot of aggravation and itâs been very hard for them to move onâŠ
âI would think itâs probably because William just thought: 'I donât want to get married and this simply isnât fair for you.' Iâm sure heâs very sad.â
