Dreamgirls

Director: Bill Condon

Cast: Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce Knowles

Cert: 12

A musical – of sorts – set around a l960s Motown female singing group.

It opens brightly and with a lot of promise – was there, after all, a sound quite like that of Motown? – but the promise is finally undelivered as the initial directorial control is lost.

As the group – The Dreamettes – progresses so too do the tensions and the in-fighting. But, surprisingly, the film goes nowhere in particular.

Murphy, however, is excellent – never thought you’d say that – and the only sorrow is that he wasn’t given a more meaningful film to be excellent in.
