Theron denies pro-American bias

Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron today hit back at claims that her new documentary takes a pro-US view of the problems facing Cuba.

The South African-born actress was speaking ahead of the UK premiere of East Of Havana, which was made by her production company, Denver and Delilah Films.

Written and directed by Jauretsi Saizarbitoria and Emilia Menocal, it tells the story of three young rappers who live in the Alamar ghetto on the Caribbean island.

Detailing their shared love of hip-hop, the film also focuses on their economic plight and the censorship they face from the Communist government of Fidel Castro.

But the directors and their movie star producer have faced accusations of highlighting problems caused by the fall of the Soviet Union while ignoring the role of the US embargo.

Theron, who won an Oscar in 2003 for her role in Monster, insisted the film was not intended to make any political comment.

She said: “I think in the film we really address the America/Cuba relationship.

“If there is any political comment it was through their voices – it’s their story not our story.

“In no way are we saying America isn’t at fault here.”

She added: “Do you actually think in America this is seen as a pro-American film?

“If we really made a film about the embargo it wouldn’t make sense. It’s ridiculous.”

Theron, whose boyfriend is Irish actor Stuart Townsend, said the film was as much about hip-hop as the plight of the main protagonists in the documentary.

Admitting she was no expert, she said she had been encouraged to enjoy the musical genre by Saizarbitoria, a close friend of the star for more than 16 years.

Theron said she was pleased the film was sparking debate and added she was enjoying herself at the festival.

She confessed she was hoping to meet festival patron Sir Sean Connery at some point.

“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him – he is like royalty,” she added.

“I met him in Prague. He did a film called the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen with my boyfriend Stuart – I hope he remembers me.”
